The measure was announced by House speaker Tim Moore following news of a shooting at a Florida high school that killed 17 people there. A spokesman for Mr. Moore said the committee, titled the House Select Committee on School Safety will examine safety regulations in place in North Carolina’s elementary, middle and high schools and make recommendations on possible statutory and non-statutory changes to ensure the safety of students, teachers and other school personnel at North Carolina schools.
The town of Wake Forest is aiming to open a remodeled version of its municipal aquatic facility at Holding Park in May this year. According to town officials, the town began construction work on the project in December 2017. The new facility pool will have three bodies of water, including a six-lane, 25-yard lap pool, two water slides with plunge pool and a children’s pool with water play equipment. The remodeling of the Holding Park facility was originally scheduled for 2016 but the timeline for re-opening was pushed back after structural problems were discovered. The budget for the overhaul of the facility is $2.5 million.
