Amazon announced that it has chosen a location in Garner for the site of a new 2.6 million square foot distribution center. The company said it will invest $200 million to build the center at the site of a plant formerly owned by ConAgra on Jones Sausage Rd. That facility was closed in 2009 after an accident. Amazon estimates the distribution center will create approximately 1,500 jobs. Garner’s Town Council on July 2 approved a special use permit to develop 88 acres of the 98 acre site. The development will include a four-story building with a footprint of 680,000 square feet. Company and town officials estimated the project would bring in an additional $45 million in income to the area. Officials from the Hillwood Development company, which is managing the new development, said they would work with town officials and the North Carolina Department of Transportation to invest in improvements along Jones Sausage road where the center will be located. Amazon hopes to open the new distribution center by fall 2019.
